2019 Hidden Windows
Throughout our history, we’ve had the privilege of working with Cabernet Sauvignon from at least seven different vineyards around the state. Each planting is a window into the unique terroir of the specific site and, despite what is sometimes written, we can confirm that Cabernet Sauvignon does express terroir, when it’s allowed to. Hidden Windows gives us an opportunity to explore various expressions of the variety – 2019 features Discovery Vineyard. . Pairing Ideas: prime rib, grilled portabellas, pepper-crusted tuna.
Tasting notes
In the glass, the wine is a dark ruby right to the edge. On the nose there are dried herbal notes, dusty cocoa, and dark red fruits. The palate is brighter with red fruit, cherry and spicy herbs. The wine is classically proportioned, well-balanced, and age-worthy with supple tannins contributing to a round finish.

Discovery Vineyard (90% of the final blend) is located 90 miles West and slightly South of Walla Walla in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA of Washington State. The site sits just above the Columbia River – literally on a bluff that looks out over the river into eastern Oregon immediately to the South. Sitting at 550 feet above sea level, the generous southerly slope provides ideal air drainage and allows for optimal ripening.
The soils at Discovery are generally very shallow, with some sections of the vineyard having only 12-18 inches of wind-blown loess above the fractured basalt bedrock. Our block of Cabernet Sauvignon was planted in 2005 with Clone 8 CS by owners Milo and Kay May who, along with their son Oliver, still farm it today. At only 40 acres planted, it’s a special site that has rightfully developed an outstanding reputation for quality.
This wine also features a small addition of Merlot (10%) that is sourced from the venerable Seven Hills Vineyard, located a bit closer to home in the Walla Walla Valley.
